# CMO Tenure Has Fallen 35%. The Company Shapes the Clock.

← Back to guides

CMOs who started in 2010 had a median tenure of 4.0 years. For those who started in 2022, it was 2.6. That's a 35% drop across the cohorts measured.

Findem and CMO Huddles analyzed historical start cohorts and more than 13,000 current U.S. CMOs to find what sits behind it. Ownership, company size, and industry all move the clock. Public-company CMOs average 54% longer in their current roles than VC-backed CMOs.

Tenure looks less like a verdict on the person and more like a function of the mandate and the company around it. The report ends with an action agenda for both sides of the table.
